Qianzishan Waste-to-Energy Project – Emergency Odor Control Using Pelletized Activated Carbon

2025-07-30

Location: Wuhan, China
Industry: Municipal Solid Waste Incineration
Application: Odor and VOC removal in emergency deodorization system
Product Used: Coal-based pelletized activated carbon (iodine value ~850 mg/g)
Project Start: March 2024
Project Overview

In response to a sudden increase in odor emissions during the expansion phase of the Qianzishan WtE plant, a rapid-response deodorization system was deployed. The system integrates plant-derived liquid spray scrubbing with a fixed-bed activated carbon adsorption module. The target pollutants include hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), ammonia (NH₃), and a broad spectrum of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing VOCs.

Technical Parameters
Airflow rate: 50,000 m³/h
Pollutant concentration:
  • H₂S: 10-50 mg/m³
  • NH₃/VOCs: <100 mg/m³
Carbon type: Pelletized coal-based activated carbon (φ4 mm, iodine ≥850 mg/g)
Process: Fixed-bed adsorption with replaceable media trays
Performance Results
  • Average removal efficiency: 94.1%
  • Stable operation under fluctuating gas load
  • No breakthrough observed after 30 days of continuous use
Standards & Monitoring
  • Real-time odor monitoring (TVOC, H₂S sensors)
  • Compliance with local fugitive emission limits for waste incineration plants
